Weekend Backpack program
Helping make sure local children have food when school is out.
The Main Street Community Center’s Weekend Backpack Program provides nutritious, easy-to-prepare food to children in the Windham-Ashland-Jewett School District to help supplement meals on weekends and during school breaks.
We believe that every child deserves access to enough food, and that asking for a little extra support should never be something a family feels embarrassed about. This program is here for any WAJ family who could benefit from it.

How the Program Works
Registered children receive a discreet backpack of food each week to take home.
Each backpack contains, at minimum:
- 2 breakfast servings
- 3 easy-to-prepare entrees
- 2 snacks
Backpacks are available for pickup at the Main Street Community Center each week. If transportation to the Center is difficult, delivery can be arranged.
Who Can Participate?
The Weekend Backpack Program is available to children in the Windham-Ashland-Jewett School District.
There are no eligibility requirements to participate. You do not need to provide financial information, proof of income, or an explanation of your family's circumstances.
If having some extra food at home would be helpful, we encourage you to register.

We understand that every family’s circumstances are different, and we want this program to be a comfortable and supportive resource.
Participation in the Weekend Backpack Program is confidential. Backpacks are distributed discreetly, and we do everything we can to protect the privacy and dignity of participating families.
Our goal is simple: to make sure local children have food to eat when school is not in session.

The Weekend Backpack Program is made possible through the generosity of local families, businesses, organizations, and community members.
During the 2025–2026 school year, our community came together to pack more than 3,000 meals and snacks for local families.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make that possible, and we hope to continue growing the program this year.
